Statement by Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov, Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, on the collapse of a building in Gaza

I am devastated by reports of people trapped under the rubble following the collapse of a building in Gaza, with lives at risk, as search-and-rescue operations led by the Civil Defence continue. An estimated 100 people, including 50 children, were living in the building when it collapsed.

I commend the humanitarian community that has quickly mobilized to support the emergency response. Egypt has provided heavy machinery, while the United Arab Emirates and Qatar are set to deliver relief items. Through the limited stocks available in Gaza, we will support survivors with health, shelter and other critical items and services. Lives may still be saved, and every effort must be made to reach those trapped under the rubble.

Across Gaza, people are living in hundreds of damaged structures assessed as unsafe, for lack of better options. Today’s tragedy underscores the grave risks faced by families living in these structures and the urgent need for safer alternatives. No one should have to risk their life simply to find a safe place to shelter.

Ahead of the rains, the humanitarian community is supporting those who choose to relocate from damaged buildings and flood-prone areas, including through voluntary relocation to safer sites.

I call for urgent approvals for the entry of heavy machinery, specialized equipment, engine oil and fuel needed for search-and-rescue operations. Tents, tarpaulins and other non-food items must also reach the most vulnerable communities in the next four weeks. Every possible effort must be made to save lives, protect people from further harm and provide families with safer places to live. Every minute counts.

On behalf of the humanitarian community, I extend my deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones and to all those affected by this tragedy. We will remain in solidarity with the people of Gaza and continue working to help those in need.
