Protection of Civilians Weekly Report | 27 Jan - 2 Feb 2010

This week, Israeli forces killed one Palestinian (Gaza) and injured 20 others throughout the oPt. In the West Bank, Israeli forces removed 24 movement obstacles in the south. Israeli settlers take over a house in the Old City of Jerusalem; there were other settler-related incidents. A new wave of demolition orders in the West Bank. In Gaza, access restrictions on fishing areas continue. Tunnels continue to claim lives; two Palestinians died. Internal attacks result in two injuries. Electricity crisis continues despite slight improvement. Limited shipments of exports and entry of glass continue. Phase one of the new Northern Sewage Treatment Plant completed. Cooking gas.

This week, Israeli forces injured 12 Palestinians in the West Bank; there were no casualties in Gaza for the second week in a row. In the West Bank, Israeli settler-related incidents continue; five Palestinians and three settlers wounded. Palestinian cemetery vandalized in 'Awarta (Nablus). New demolition orders issued in Area C. In the Gaza Strip, floods update; 800 people affected. Gaza Power Plant partially shut down due to fuel shortage; up to 12 hour blackouts. Exports of flowers and strawberries continue. Cooking gas.

This week, there was a serious escalation in violence in Gaza; seven Palestinians were killed in Gaza as a result of Israeli airstrikes. Also, 24 others were injured by Israeli forces throughout the oPt. In the West Bank, settler-related incidents declined this week. Palestinian community displaced following massive demolition. In Gaza also, two other Palestinians died in tunnel collapse. Clashes at Gaza-Egypt border. Thousands left Gaza through Rafah Crossing. Death toll from H1N1 reaches 19. Settler-related incidents; incidents related to protests by settlers against the freeze of settlement construction continue. New Beit Iba permanently-staffed checkpoint becomes "partial". In Gaza, explosion targets civil society associations. Death toll of Influenza A (H1N1) virus reaches 13. Concerns over "trapped" students at risk of losing their academic year continues. There is a significant increase in settler-related incidents, in which four Palestinians injured. Main Nablus-Jenin road closed off. New report on Area C released. In Gaza, NGOs targeted. UNRWA hand over the first temporary shelter. Scheduled rolling blackouts throughout Gaza reach up to 32 hours. Death toll of H1N1 reaches nine in Gaza. During the two-week period, 15 Palestinians were wounded by Israeli forces throughout the oPt, of whom 11 in the West Bank. Settlers continue to take over Palestinian houses in East Jerusalem. There were 37 settler-related incidents, 24 of them affected Palestinians. Approximately 2,450 Palestinian structures in Area C demolished in the last 12 years. Easing of movement restrictions during the Muslim holiday, Eid al Adha. In Gaza, Israeli air strikes continue. First confirmed cases of H1N1. Additional restrictions facing Gazans wishing to exit Gaza through Erez. Serious concern over Kerem Shalom crossing's lack of capacity for the entry of cooking gas. Imports remain below average needs.

In Gaza, increase in Israeli airstrikes led to the injury of five Palestinians. 750 students at risk of losing the academic year. Despite increase in cooking gas, shortages continue. This week, one boy was killed in Gaza and 13 Palestinians sustained wounds by Israeli forces throughout the oPt; 12 in the West Bank and one in Gaza. Demolitions in East Jerusalem intensify; two houses demolished this week. Eviction and stop work orders delivered in Area C. There were seven settler-related incidents affecting Palestinians; a Palestinian and two internationals injured. In Gaza, 3 percent of weekly cooking gas entered affecting hospitals and social institutions run by WFP; all 30 cooking gas stations were closed as of 16 Nov. Imports remain below average needs.
